Kronik Obstürüktif Akciğer Hastalarının Alternatif ve Tamamlayıcı Tedavi Yöntemi Kullanımı

Year 2017, Volume: 10 Issue: 4, 216 - 221, 01.11.2017

Abstract

The Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients

Year 2017, Volume: 10 Issue: 4, 216 - 221, 01.11.2017

Abstract

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive chronic disease that causes life-threatening complications and is increasingly symptomatic. In addition to pharmacological treatments, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) methods are widely used to alleviate or eliminate COPD symptoms. Objectives: This study was carried out as a descriptive study in order to examine the use of CAM in the patients with COPD. Method: The study was conducted with 125 patients who admitted to COPD diagnosis in the chest diseases clinic of a state hospital. Results: Average age of patients evaluated in the study was 66.64 ± 9.38 years and 56.8% of COPD patients used at least one CAM method and the most used CAM method was herbal product / vitamin supplementation (73.5%). CAM methods of patients were using to relieve symptoms of dyspnea (81.7%), cough (66.2%), sputum production (52.1%), fatigue (23.9%), pain (14.1%) and insomnia (4.2%) and 40.3% of the patients were found to benefit from CAM methods. It was found that most of the patients (88.4%) were used CAM methods without information and individuals with more than 10 years of disease use more CAM method. Conclusion: The use of CAM method was common among COPD patients, but they used these methods without sufficient information and the use of CAM method was found to be increased depending on the duration of the disease. This is why it is recommended that the health personnel should question the use cases of CAM methods of the patient individuals and make planned trainings about CAM methods
