The Safety of Cosmetic Products for Babies and Children

Abstract

Newborn baby skin is much thinner and more sensitive compared to the adult's and is more susceptible to dryness. For this reason, there are many cosmetic products on the market for the use of babies and children. Children under one year of age are particularly susceptible to exposure to a chemical due to their larger body surface area compared to their weight, different metabolic rates than adults, and immature organ systems. The aim of this review is to deal with an up-to-date approach to the toxicological effects of cosmetic care products for the use of babies and children in the market that may arise due to their production and use. In this context, many products such as diapers, cleaning wipes, baby powder, moisturizer, and sunscreen cream or lotion are considered and it might be seen that some synthetic preservatives or natural flavors in these products may lead to undesirable effects on babies who are still under development. In addition, it is possible for some chemicals, especially heavy metals, to pass into the product, regardless of the product contents, during the packaging and transfer process. As a result, parents should be aware of the product ingredients, and if the use of allergen-containing products cannot be completely avoided, the simultaneous use of these products should be reduced. On the other hand, the meticulousness of the manufacturers in introducing baby cosmetic products to the market at every stage such as production, packaging, and transportation is important in reducing the adverse effects mediated by these products, to which children and babies are frequently exposed to in daily life.

Bebek ve Çocuklara Yönelik Kozmetik Ürünlerin Güvenliliği

Abstract

Yenidoğan bebek cildi daha ince ve hassas olup, yetişkin cildine göre kurumaya daha yatkındır. Bu nedenle, piyasada bebeklerin ve çocukların kullanımına yönelik üretilmiş/hazırlanmış birçok kozmetik ürün bulunmaktadır. Özellikle bir yaş altındaki çocuklar, ağırlıklarına kıyasla daha geniş bir vücut yüzey alanına sahip olmaları, yetişkinlerden farklı metabolizma hızları ve tam gelişmemiş organ sistemleri sebebiyle kimyasalara maruziyet durumunda daha duyarlıdırlar. Bu derlemede amacımız, piyasadaki bebek ve çocukların kullanımına yönelik kozmetik bakım ürünlerinin, üretim ve kullanımlarına bağlı ortaya çıkabilecek toksikolojik etkileri ele almaktır. Bu kapsamda bebek bezleri, temizleme mendilleri, bebek pudrası, nemlendirici ve güneş koruyucu krem veya losyon gibi birçok ürün ele alındığında, bu ürünlerin içeriğindeki bazı sentetik koruyucular veya doğal aroma vericilerin henüz gelişimi devam etmekte olan bebekler üzerinde istenmeyen etkilere yol açtığı görülebilmektedir. Ayrıca ürün içeriklerinden bağımsız olarak, paketlenme ve transfer sürecinde de başta ağır metaller olmak üzere, bazı kimyasalların ürüne geçişi mümkün olabilmektedir. Sonuç olarak, ebeveynlerin ürün içerikleri hakkında farkındalık kazanması, alerjen içerikli ürünlerin kullanımından tam olarak kaçınılamıyorsa bu ürünlerin eş zamanlı olarak kullanımın azaltılması; üreticilerin ise üretim, paketleme ve taşıma gibi her aşamada bebek kozmetik ürünlerinin piyasaya sunulmasında titiz davranması, çocuk ve bebeklerin gündelik hayatta sıklıkla maruz kaldıkları bu ürünlerle oluşan advers etkilerin azaltılmasında önem taşımaktadır.
