Instructions to authors

EGE JOURNAL OF MEDICINE, the official publication of Ege University Faculty of Medicine, is published once in every four months. The journal publishes clinical and experimental research papers, case reports, invited editorial reviews, congress and meeting announcements, and letters to the editor on any field of medicine. The manuscripts will be reviewed by the Editorial Board and consultants and should be approved by the Editorial Board before being published. Reviewers will pay particular attention to scientific accuracy, relevance and appropriateness of style and language. The Editorial Board has the right to accept or reject papers and to set priority for publication. Manuscripts are subjected to editorial revision by the board whenever necessary. Manuscripts submitted are not returned to the authors, accepted for publication or not The scientific and juridical responsibilities are assumed by the authors. For each published article a copy of the related issue will be sent to the first author.

Manuscript guidelines:

    1. Original articles that have never been published and are not under simultaneous review by another publisher should be submitted.


    2. A cover letter including the following statement should be signed by all authors and submitted together with the manuscript
      "None of the parts of this research article / case report entitled as [……..] has had prior or duplicate publication or submission elsewhere. The manuscript has been read and approved by all authors and the requirements for authorship have been met Furthermore, each author believes that the manuscript represents honest work. The name, address, e­mail adress, telephone and fax number of the corresponding author who is responsible for the communication with the other authors about revisions and final approval of the proofs is given below."


    3. The manuscripts should be written in English.


    4. The text must be written double-spaced on good quality A4 papers with all margins at least 3 cm wide. The manuscript should be written using a WINDOWS 98 compatible software. The font size and style should be 10 pt and Arial Tur. The authors should submit the original document in a 3.5 inch diskette together with four copies of the manuscript to the Editorial Office of Ege University Faculty of Medicine.


    5. Research articles should not exceed six pages, including the references, and case reports should be submitted with a maximum of three pages.


    6. Research manuscripts should be arranged in the following order; english title (in capital letters), turkish title (in capital letters), authors' names and addresses (last names in capital letters), key words, "anahtar sözcükler", english summary (150-200 words), turkish summary (150-200 words), introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusion (if necessary), references. Case reports should be arranged in the following order; english title (in capital letters), turkish title (in capital letters), authors' names and addresses (Iast names in capital letters), key words, "anahtar sözcükler", english summary (50-200 words), turkish summary (50-200 words), introduction, case, discussion, references. Editorial review papers should also include main headings (in capital letters), subheadings (numbered and in smail letters) and conclusions (if necessary).


    7. The key words should be chosen according to the internationally accepted standards (MeSH). The summary should include the following sections: introduction, materials and methods, results, and conclusion.


    8. Acknowledgement is required if a part of research has been presented before or the research has been sponsored by a foundation, and should be written below the key words.


    9. Tables and figures (including graphics, photographs and drawings) should be numbered in Arabic numerals consecutively. Table numbers and legends should be written over the tables, while figure numbers and legends should be written under the figures. The number of figures should not exceed four for research and case reports. All tables and figures should be prepared by the mentioned computer programs, their width not exceeding 8.5 cm., and inserted within the manuscript properiy, if possible. Letterset or other professional aids should be used in the lettering and scale marking of illustrations to ensure high standards, consistent in style and letter size. Line drawings should be drawn with Indian ink on tracing paper ready for offset printing. Photographs should be clear, highly contrasted, black and white glossy printed. The width of the prints should not exceed 8.5 cm. A copy of all prints should be mounted on A4 papers, positioned correctly with the figure number and legend written below. Two sets of extra copies should be submitted within an envelope and the name of the first author, title of the manuscript and the number of the figure should be written with a light pencil on the back of each illustration and on the envelope. If prefered, colored reprints will be accepted and charged to the authors.


    10. All the references in the text should be quoted by numbers in parenthesis and all should be included in the reference list References should be arranged in order of citation and numbered consecutively. Titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the Index Medicus. No periods should follow the abbreviations of periodicals and author names. All author names should be listed when four or less; when five or more only the first three should be given, followed by et al. Book titles should be underlined.

      Examples of reference listing are as follows:

        1. Reference from a periodical:

        2. Reference from an edited book with contributions of different authors:

        3. Reference from a book written by one or more authors:
          Sadler TW. Langman's Medical Embryology. 6th ed. Baltimore:Williams & Wilkins, 1990: 96-114.
        4. References referred to in the text, which have been citated in another reference, not studied directly by the authors:
          Ginsberg AH, Gale MJ, Rose LM, Clark EA. T-cell alterations in Iate poliomyelitis. Arch Neurol 1989;46:497-501. In: Melchers W, de Visser M, Jongen P, et al. The postpolio syndrome: No evidence for poliovirus persistence. Ann Neurol 1992;32:728­732.
        5. Reference from internet should include name of the author (if any), title of the site, the URL (address), and the date accessed:

    11. Following revisions and typesetting, all the proofreading should be made by the corresponding author and returned to the Editorial Office within 48 hours.


    12. All biomedical research performed on subjects should be in accordance with international ethic rules and approved by local ethic committies.
