Approach to hypertensive emergencies in the elderly

Abstract

Hypertension has a high rate of 60 to 80 percent in the elderly. The elderly population is increasing around the world every day. Therefore, treatment of hypertension becomes more important. For the prevention of high blood pressure in the hypertensive elderly, blood pressure in patients with severe acute, life-threatening complications should be reduced to below 160/100 mmHg gradually under observation. Aggressive lowering of blood pressure may induce cerebral or myocardial ischemia or infarction.
