Epidemiological and overall survival characteristics of head and neck cancer patients recorded in the database of Ege University Faculty of Medicine

Abstract

Aim: General demographic characteristics, tumor localization frequency and overall survival according to cancer locations of the patients diagnosed with head and neck tumor located in EU Cancer Control Application and Research Center (EUKAM) were investigated. Methods: According to the topography code of 6951 head and neck cancer patients registered at Ege University between 1992-2016; diagnosis age, tumor location, histopathology, sex, treatment modalities, latest status, follow-up period were evaluated. Results: 6549 (94.2%) of our cases were diagnosed as carcinoma, the larynx is the most common site with a rate of 45.3%. Male are 80% of the cases. According to genders, tumor location was mostly in the larynx (57.3%) in males and in the oral cavity (40.6%) in females. Most of the cases were diagnosed in locally limited stage (47.9%). Overall survival at 5 and 10 years was 56% and 48%, respectively. The 5-year survival rate in the larynx and nasopharynx was 61% and 57%, respectively. Conclusion: Laryngeal cancer is the most common tumor and 5-year overall survival is 61%. Over the years, the number of cases with head and neck tumors continued to increase.
