Women's genital hygiene behaviors and the effect of these behaviors on vaginal infection

Aim: In developing countries, genital infection is an important public health problem that most women face at least once in their lifetime. Genital hygiene is one of the most important steps to prevent genital infections. When genital hygiene is not taken care of, the risk of genital infection increases, and if the infection is not treated, biopsychosocial problems may occur. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between genital hygiene behaviors and genital infection in women aged 18-49. Materials and Methods: This study was planned as a case-control study. A questionnaire consisting of the sociodemographic part and the Genital Hygiene Behaviors Inventory (GHBI) was used to collect the data. Results: 214 participants were included in the study. The mean age of the participants was 31.73±7.50 years and 45.8% (n=98) were in the group with vaginitis. 22.4% (n=48) of the participants do vaginal douching, 53.7% (n=115) do genital cleansing with water, 73.8% (n=158) think about have sufficient knowledge about genital hygiene. The mean frequency of vaginal douching was 3.10±1.48 per week, and their total score on GHBI was 82.08±10.41. Vaginal douching was found to be statistically significantly higher in the group with vaginitis than in the group without vaginitis (p<0.001). The total GHBI score of the group without vaginitis was 83.43±9.88, and the total GHBI score of the group with vaginitis was found to be 80.50±10.86, and this difference was statistically significant (p=0.040). The total GHBI score of those who thought they had sufficient knowledge about genital hygiene was 83.21±9.71, and those who did not think that they had sufficient knowledge were 78.91±11.71, and this difference was statistically significant (p=0.008). Conclusion: As the level of education and knowledge about genital hygiene increase, the mean GHBI score increases. By organizing trainings on genital hygiene, women's knowledge level on this subject can be increased and vaginitis, vaginal douche etc. situations can be reduced.

Amaç: Gelişmekte olan ülkelerde genital enfeksiyon, kadınların çoğunun yaşamları boyunca en az bir kez karşılaştığı önemli bir halk sağlığı sorunudur. Genital enfeksiyonlardan korunmak için genital hijyenin sağlanması en önemli basamaklardan biridir. Genital hijyene dikkat edilmediğinde, genital enfeksiyon riski artmakta, enfeksiyonun tedavi edilmediği durumda ise biyopsikososyal sorunlar oluşabilmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı 18-49 yaş arası kadınlarda genital hijyen davranışları ile genital enfeksiyon arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesidir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu araştırma vaka kontrol araştırması olarak planlanmıştır. Verilerin toplanmasında, sosyodemografik kısım ve Genital Hijyen Davranışları Envanteri (GHDE)’den oluşan bir anket formu kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmaya 214 katılımcı dahil edildi. Katılımcıların yaş ortalaması 31,73±7,50 ve %45,8’i (n=98) vajiniti olan grupta yer alıyordu. Katılımcıların %22,4’ü (n=48) vajinal duş yaptığını, %53,7’si (n=115) genital temizliği su ile yaptığını, %73,8’i (n=158) genital hijyen konusunda yeterli bilgiye sahip olduğunu düşündüğünü belirtti. Vajinal duş sıklığı haftada ortalama 3,10±1,48 ve GHDE’den aldıkları toplam puan 82,08±10,41 idi. Vajiniti olan grupta vajiniti olmayan gruba göre vajinal duş yapma durumu istatiksel anlamlı olarak daha yüksek saptandı (p<0,001). Vajiniti olmayan grubun GHDE toplam puanı 83,43±9,88, vajiniti olan grubun GHDE toplam puanı 80,50±10,86 olarak bulundu ve bu fark istatiksel olarak anlamlıydı (p=0,040). Genital hijyen konusunda yeterli bilgiye sahip olduğunu düşünenlerin GHDE toplam puanı 83,21±9,71, yeterli bilgiye sahip olduğunu düşünmeyenlerin GHDE toplam puanı 78,91±11,71 olarak saptandı ve bu fark istatiksel olarak anlamlıydı (p=0,008). Sonuç: Eğitim seviyesi ve genital hijyen konusunda bilgi düzeyi arttıkça GHDE puan ortalaması yükselmektedir. Genital hijyen ile ilgili eğitimler düzenlenerek, kadınların bu konuda bilgi düzeyleri artılabilir ve vajinit, vajinal duş vb. durumlar azaltılabilir.
