Knowledge levels of dentists in Türkiye regarding dental stem cell applications: A cross-sectional survey

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge level of actively practicing dentists in Türkiye regarding dental stem cells and to determine the specific areas in which knowledge deficiencies are most pronounced. Materials and Methods: A total of 384 dentists in Türkiye participated in a Google Forms–based online survey. The questionnaire consisted of three main sections: a 17-item sociodemographic information form, a 24-item knowledge assessment divided into seven subdomains, and a SWOT analysis section. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0, while qualitative data were evaluated through thematic analysis. Results: Among the 384 respondents, 93.2% demonstrated below-average knowledge regarding the acquisition, use, and storage of dental stem cells, while 84.5% expressed willingness to attend educational programs on this topic. Dentists with specialty or doctoral education exhibited significantly higher knowledge of stem-cell-related complications (χ² = 8.926, p = 0.003). Attendance at scientific meetings and congresses was also associated with significantly greater knowledge levels (p < 0.001). SWOT analysis revealed that the most prominent opportunity was motivation and desire for learning (22 mentions), the major weakness was lack of clinical application experience (20 mentions), and the primary threat was the inadequacy and ambiguity of current regulations (17 mentions). Conclusions: Dentists in Türkiye demonstrate substantial knowledge gaps regarding dental stem cells but exhibit a strong willingness to pursue education in this field.

Abstract

Amaç: bu çalışma Türkiye’deki aktif çalışan diş hekimlerinin dental kök hücre konusundaki bilgi düzeyini ve bilgi eksikliğinin hangi alanlardan kaynaklandığını ölçmeyi amaçlamıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Türkiye’de aktif çalışan 384 diş hekimi üzerinde Google anket olarak hazırlanan anket uygulanmıştır. Anket başlıca üç bölüme ayrılmıştır. 17 soruluk sosyodemografik bilgiler anketi, 7 alt bölümde bilgi düzeyini ölçen 24 soruluk anket bölümü ve SWOT analizi uygulanmıştır. Nicel bulgular SPSS 25.0, nitel veriler ise tematik analiz ile incelenmiştir. Bulgular: Araştırmaya katılan 384 diş hekiminin %93,2’si dental kök hücrelerin elde edilmesi, kullanımı ve saklanması konularında ortalamanın altında bilgi düzeyine sahip bulunmuş; buna karşın %84,5’i bu konuda düzenlenecek bir eğitime katılmak istediğini belirtmiştir. Uzmanlık veya doktora eğitimi alanların kök hücre komplikasyonları konusunda bilgi düzeyi istatistiksel olarak anlamlı biçimde daha yüksek bulunmuştur (χ²=8.926, p=0.003), ayrıca kongre veya bilimsel etkinliklere katılanlarda bilgi düzeyi belirgin biçimde artmıştır (p<0.001). SWOT analizine göre, en güçlü fırsat eğitim ve öğrenme isteği (22 tekrar), en belirgin zayıf yön uygulama deneyimi eksikliği (20 tekrar), en kritik tehdit ise mevzuatın yetersizliği ve belirsizliği (17 tekrar) olarak tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç: Türkiye’deki diş hekimlerinin dental kök hücre konusunda bilgi eksikliği vardır ve hekimler bu konuda eğitime isteklidir.
