Abstract

In this study the effects of leisure time activities on the personality and psycho-social development of the youth are examined. the study was on 389 people attendindg Youth Centers of the Middle East Technical University, Hacettepe University Leisure Time Clubs, Yenimahalle and Çankaya Youth Centre. A questionnaire prepared by researchers was applied on groups in leisure time clubs except from 90 youth a positive psycho-social development was determined on the other people after the leisure time activities. Findings proved that youth thought of themselves as silent and passive before leisure time activities whereas after the leisure time activities they felt more active, social, self-confident and had less anxiety. There is a clear increase in their social abilities such as self-awareness, self-explanation and taking responsibilities compared to the situation before the leisure time activities. Half of the youth said leisure time activities didn't affect theirs success in school, whereas one third of them said they have an increase in their success. As a result, in order to protect psychological health of the youth and increase their social abilities the number of youth centers of leisure time activities should be increased.
