Carcinosarcoma (malignant mixed tumor) of parotid gland: a case report

Abstract

True malignant mixed tumor (carcinosarcoma) of salivary gland is an agressive and extremely rare neoplasm composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. We report a case of a ture malignant mixed tumor of the parotid gland in a 54 year old man who had a mass for 6 years which rapidly enlarged for the last 1 year. Microscopic examination showed pleomorphic adenoma in association with not otherwise specified adenocarcinoma, and undifferentiated carcinoma which was intermingled with sarcomatous elements. The latter consisted mainly of malignant fibrous histiocytoma like plemorphic sarcoma, chondrosarcoma and liposarcoma. Clinical history and immunohistochemical findings suggested that the tumor was of myoepithelial cell origin.
