Usage of forehead flaps in reconstruction of periorbital region defects

Abstract

Aim: The surgical procedure of periorbital region is exactly different from the other parts of the body, because of its delicate and thin structure. The aim of reconstruction of the periorbital region is protection of cornea and providing an active eyelid. Material and Method: In our study, we performed reconstruction with lateral or median based forehead flaps, between the date of April 2001 and April 2006, to 27 patient (10 men, 17 women, mean age 63) who were operated on because of tumour in their periorbital region. The flaps were generally used for reconstruction of lower lid and parsiyel upper lid. Results: The most common complications: Ectropion, lymphedema, laxity of flap and transconjunctival insufficiency. Our aesthetic results were acceptable from the color match, periorbital tissue similarity and, donor site scar point of view. Conclusion: We evaluated our results as aesthetically and functionally (protection of cornea, epiphora, flap viability, ectropion). As a result; the reconstruction of medium sized periorbital region defects with forehead flaps is an easy, realible method and suitable for a lot of modifications.
