A case of atypical pigmented basal cell carsinoma: dermoscopy in the diagnosis

Abstract

Basal cell carcinoma, the most common primer cutaneous malignancy, is generally localized in the head and neck area and mostly presents as nodular type. Some of basal cell carsinomas are pigmented and they clinically imitate melanoma. Under the circumstances, the morphological differential diagnosis is difficult. Dermoscopy is a non-invasive technique used in the diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions. It has been a directory tool in the differential diagnosis of melanocytic and nonmelanocytic lesions. Here, a case of pigmented basal cell carcinoma localized on the abdomen is presented because of its atypical clinical appearance and having variety of dermoscopic criteria which allowed almost certain diagnosis.
