Clinical characteristics of hyphema related to blunt ocular trauma

Abstract

Aim:To evaluate the etiological and clinical characteristics of hyphema that occurs after blunt trauma. Material and Methods: A retrospective study of 114 patients recognized and treated between September 2000 and October 2007 for traumatic hyphema was conducted. Results: Of the patients in the study 80% were 25 years old or younger. The most common etiological factors of blunt trauma were pebble (23.6%), wood (19.2%), ball (13.9%) and plastic pellet (9.6%). The most common complication of hyphema was the increase of intraocular pressure (31.5%). Medical treatment was successful in most cases. In the cases where treatment was not successful surgical treatment was required. Conclusion: If early and proper therapy in traumatic hyphemas cases occurs, results are satisfactory. In addition to medical treatment, surgical treatment may be necessary for some patients. When posterior ocular segment injuries and hyphema of greater magnitude are both present, the final visual acuities are worse. In our study, we observed that traumatic hyphema occurs more frequently in children and young adults. To help prevent future visual loss in this group, protective measures should be taken, such as informing families and communities about the common causes and complications of hyphema.
