The effect of blood lipid profile and hormones in postmenopausal sexual dysfunction

Abstract

Aim: A study of the effect of blood lipid profile and hormones in postmenopausal sexual dysfunction. Material and Methods: One hundred women who attended a menopause outpatient clinic of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Ege University Medical Facult were administered a questionnaire. During the biochemical investigation of free testosterone and DHEA-S levels, the results were statistically evaluated. The investigation detected that menopause had no negative effect on sexual function. Results: Forty-seven of the 100 patients included in the survey mentioned that their sexual life was affected, 53 were not affected at all. There were no statistically significant differences in education level, professions and additional disease between the affected and unaffected groups . 31% of the patients in the study had had surgery for a female aliment. When asked about the effect of their surger, 45% of the answers were positive while 10% were without reply. When evaluating blood lipid profile in the group with sexual disfunction, there were no significant differences between blood total cholesterol, triglycerides, free testosterone, DHEA-S levels in the postmenopausal sexual life affected group. Conclusion: In our study there were no significant statistical differences between the demographic characteristics, blood hormone and lipid profiles and other parameters in the postmenopausal sexual life of the affected and unaffected groups.

Postmenopozal cinsel fonksiyon bozukluklarında kan lipid profilinin ve hormonların etkileri

Öz

Amaç: Menopozal kadınlarda cinsel fonksiyon bozukluklarında kan lipid düzeylerinin ve hormonların etkilerinin araştırılması. Yöntem ve Gereç: Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Kadın Hastalıkları ve Doğum A.B.D menopoz polikliniğine başvuran 100 kadına onamları alınarak anket uygulandı. Biyokimyasal tetkikleri sırasında serbest testosteron ve DHEA-S araştırıldı. Sonuçlar istatistiksel olarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Ankete alınan 100 hastanın 47'si cinsel yaşamlarının etkilendiğini, 53'ü ise etkilenmediğini belirtti. Cinsel yaşamı etkilenen ve etkilenmeyen gruplar arasında eğitim, meslek, ek hastalık durumu ile ilgili istatiksel olarak anlamlı farklılık saptanmamıştır. Çalışmaya alınan hastalardan %31'i kadın hastalıklarından ameliyat olmuştur. Ameliyatların cinsel yaşama etkisi sorulduğunda, %45 oranında “Cinsel yaşamım etkilendi” cevabı alınırken, %10'u bu soruya cevap vermemiştir. Postmenopozal cinsel yaşamın etkilendiği grupta kan lipid profili değerlendirildiğinde, kan total kolesterol, trigliserid, serbest testosteron, DHEA-S düzeyleri arasında anlamlı bir farklılık saptanmamıştır. Sonuç: Çalışmamızda, menopozun cinsel yaşamı etkilediği ve etkilemediği gruplar arasında araştırılan sosyodemografik özellikler, kan hormon ve lipid profili ve diğer parametreler arasında anlamlı istatistiksel fark bulunamamıştır.
