What is the sacroiliitis frequency in patients with primary sjögren syndrome?

Abstract

Aim: Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease of the exocrine glands that may occur on its own (primary) or in association with various other connective tissue diseases referred to as secondary Sjögren's syndrome. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of sacroiliitis in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome. Material and Methods: 100 patients with pSS, fulfilling the US-European Consensus Criteria were included. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 18.0 software. Results: Among the patients enrolled in the study, 97% were female and 3% were male. The mean age was 47,87±10,28 years, and the mean disease duration was 5,39±4,36 years. Frequency of sacroiliitis assessed by x-ray in patients with pSjS was 7% (n=7). Sacroiliitis was confirmed by MRI in all the patients. Four patients had inflammatory back pain and peripheral arthritis and all the patients had Achilles entesitis. HLA-B27 was positive in only 2 of the patients. All the patients with sacroiliitis had sicca symptoms and positive lip biopsy results. Conclusion: The frequency of sacroiliitis in patients with pSjS was 7% (n=7). All of the patients with sacroiliitis were classified as SpA according to the ASAS Criteria and 5 of them were classified as SpA according to ESSG Criteria. SpA and SjS association is important in clinical practice.
