The assessment of biochemical, hormonal blood parameters and clinical symptoms of 89 polycystic ovarian syndrome patients

Abstract

Aim: Our aim was to investigate the metabolic parameters and clinic symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients. Material and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 89 PCOS patients who were admitted to the Ege University Gynecology polyclinic between August 2007 and September 2010. Patients charecteristics, their complaints, ultrasonographic examination, biochemical and hormonal parameters were evaluated. Results: The mean age of PCOS patients and mean body mass index were 24,0±5,2 and 24,1±4,4 kg / m2 respectively. Insulin resistance was established due to Homeostatic Model Assesment HOMA index and 34% of the patients had insulin resistance (n=31). The most common complaint of patients was nonregular menstruation cycles. When we compared the non insulin resistant group with insulin resistant in terms of cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglyceride, HDL and cholesterol levels were not considered significantly high (p=0,69;p=0,14) while an increased low density lipoprotein and triglyceride levels were found to be significantly (p=0,005; p=0,01 low). Increased Thyroid stimulating hormone and prolactin hormone levels were found in 17% and 8% patients respectively. Conclusion: Polycystic ovarian syndrome may cause gynecologic complaints by the way of changing metabolic parameters. All PCOS patients should be followed regularly and should be informed in terms of risks that can be encountered during lifetime.
