Approach to abuse and neglect in the elderly

Abstract

In general, elderly abuse is an act that endangers health and wellness of elderly person, is not accepted by the cultural values of society and harms elderly person. At present, the possibility of elderly abuse increases especially in elderly people who cannot use their social, economic, political and cultural opportunities and also due to the increasing elderly population with the increasing life expectancy and inadequacy of social security and support systems. There are six types of elderly abuse including psychical, psychological, economical, emotional, sexual, caregiver neglect and elderly people's own neglect of themselves. There are some risk factors for both elderly person and caregiver in elderly abuse and neglect. These risk factors separate in three categories as individual features, social and related factors and economic factors. Since 1970, the number of screening tools used to determine the cases of elderly abuse has been increased. However, a few of them are suitable for inpatient elderly individuals. And most of them are limited to testing acute care and in-house care. Elderly people do not say that they are abused or neglected because of the fear of re-exposure to violence, breaking family ties, being separated from the family and sent to a social institution and legal procedures. For this reason, the most effective precaution for abuse and neglect is to raise awareness of healthcare workers, elderly people and society.
