Approach to chest pain in elderly patients

Abstract

Chest pain is one of the most common complaints among the patients attending the emergency departments. Chest pain may result from any health problems related to the heart, lungs, mediastinum, esophagus or stomach. The most common and life-threatening causes of chest pain are cardiac causes. Cardiac chest pain in the elderly might have different characteristics, localization and intensity compared to that seen in younger adults. Other causes of chest pain in older adults include gastroesophageal reflux and motility disorders. Physicians who mainly deal with older patients should know that diseases might present with atypical symptoms in elderly patients.
