Observing the relation between body mass index (BMI) with related variables

Abstract

Aim: One of the most important changes in adolescence is the fast physical growth. In only 3-4 years the adolescent gets into his/her adult size. They gain 1/3 of their height and ½ of their adult weight during this period. The ratio between height/weight is also important. Since the obesity frequency is increasing in the population, it's important to teach the technics of keeping the weight in normal levels. Materials and Methods: We observed the relation between Body Mass Index (BMI) and other related variables in 664 adolescents chosen randomly in the outpatient cilnic of Tepecik Training and Research Hospital. BMI values of between 20-25 were accepted as normal. Results: The mean age was 14.48+0.59 in 664 adolescents. The male adolescents and the ones who engage in sporting activities regularly and had a hobby (music, theatre, etc.) had more likely a BMI of between 20-25. Conclusion: Since most adolescents have heavy examination schedules In the adolescent period, sportive activities affect their health positively, and their families should also be informed in this subject.
