Investigation of the changes in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students’ nutritional habits in Faculty of Medicine, Ege University, during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Aim: The COVID-19 pandemic led to various restrictions all over the world. In Türkiye, stay-at-home restrictions to control the epidemic affected people's lifestyles (nutrition, physical activity and stress). This study aimed at investigating the changes in medical students’ nutritional habits before and during the pandemic.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study carried out in Faculty of Medicine at Ege University. Sample was calculated 294 volunteer students from 1175 students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th years between the ages of 18-30. In the online data collection form, participants answered the questions about stress, appetite, weight, and physical activity. The Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale (MEDAS) was used to evaluate nutritional habits.
Results: Of the students, 60.9% were female and 39.1% were male. It was determined that 53.1% of the students had an increase in Body Mass Index (BMI), while 32.7% had a decrease. The average BMI of the students was calculated as 22.49±3.27 before the pandemic and 22.86±3.44 during the pandemic. There is a statistical difference in BMI before and during the pandemic (t:-3,270, p<0.001). The average MEDAS scale scores were determined as 6.52±2.27 before the pandemic and 7.18±2.42 during the pandemic (t:-5.093, p<0.001). Students' consumption of olive oil, vegetables, fruits, fish and nuts showed a significant change during the pandemic.
Conclusion: Government and universities should take measures such as improving student access to food and making budget changes for future epidemics in order to prevent the negative impacts on the medical students.

Abstract

Amaç: COVID-19 pandemisi tüm dünyada çeşitli kısıtlamaların olduğu bir süreç yaratmıştır. Türkiye’de de salgının kontrolü hedeflenerek evde kalmaya yönelik gündeme gelen kısıtlamalar insanların hayat tarzını (beslenme, fiziksel aktivite, stres) etkilemiştir. Bu araştırmada tıp öğrencilerinin pandemi öncesi ve sırasında beslenme düzenlerindeki değişikliklerin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu kesitsel araştırma Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Fakültede 18-30 yaşları arasındaki 3., 4. ve 5. sınıf 1175 öğrenciden hesaplanan örneklem sayısına göre 294 gönüllü öğrenci örneklemi oluşturmuştur. Online olarak doldurulan veri toplama formunda sosyodemografik özellikler, sağlık durumu, pandemi öncesi ve sırasındaki stres, uyku, iştah, kilo, fiziksel aktivitelerindeki değişim sorgulanmıştır. Beslenme alışkanlıklarının değerlendirilebilmesi için Akdeniz Diyeti Bağlılık Ölçeği (MEDAS) kullanılmıştır.
Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan 294 öğrencinin %60,9’u kadın, %39,1’i erkektir. Öğrencilerin %53,1’inde Vücut Kitle İndeksi’nde (VKİ) artma, %32,7’sinde azalma olduğu belirlenmiştir. Katılımcı öğrencilerin ortalama VKİ’i, pandemi öncesi 22,49±3,27 ve pandemi sırası 22,86±3,44 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Pandemi öncesi VKİ ile pandemi sırası VKİ arasında istatistiksel fark mevcuttur (t:-3,270, p<0,001). MEDAS ölçek puanları ortalamaları ise pandemi öncesi 6,52±2,27 ve pandemi sırası 7,18±2,42 olarak belirlenmiştir (t:-5,093, p<0,001). Öğrencilerin zeytinyağı, sebze, meyve, balık, fındık tüketimleri pandemi sırasında anlamlı bir değişim göstermiştir.
Sonuç: COVID-19 pandemisinin tıp öğrencilerinin yaşam tarzı, beslenme ve VKİ değişimleri üzerinde yarattığı olumsuz etkinin önüne geçilebilmesi için; hükümetler ve yükseköğretim kurumlarının öğrencilerin gıdalara erişimini iyileştirmek, gelecekteki salgınlara yönelik bütçe değişiklikleri yapmak gibi önlemler alması gerekmektedir.
