Effects of upper blepharoplasty surgery on keratometry in dermatochalasis

Abstract

Aim: This study aims to evaluate the effects of blepharoplasty surgery on keratometry and corneal thickness in the postoperative period in patients with upper eyelid dermatochalasis. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 45 eyes of 23 patients treated at the Erciyes University Ophthalmology Clinic between January 2022 and April 2023. Preoperative and postoperative first-month keratometric and corneal thickness measurements obtained via anterior segment swept-source optical coherence tomography (Anterion®, Heidelberg) were compared. Results: Although a statistically significant reduction was observed in postoperative anterior steep and flat keratometric values (p < 0.001), no significant change was detected in mean keratometry (p = 0.190). Additionally, a significant decrease in anterior astigmatism was recorded (p = 0.001). However, no significant changes were found in posterior keratometric parameters or corneal thickness. Conclusion: While blepharoplasty surgery induces notable topographic changes on the anterior corneal surface, posterior keratometry and corneal thickness remain unaffected. These findings highlight the need to consider the effects of eyelid surgery in refractive surgery and intraocular lens planning.
