FREE LATISSIMUS DORSI FLAP APPLICATIONS IN SOFT TISSUE RECONSTRUCTION

Abstract

Latissimus dorsı is a large, flat, trianguler muscle thai covers the posterior inferior half of the trunk and constitutes a versatile source of composite tissues for a free flap reconstruction for many areas of the body. If a myocutaneous flap is required, the skin might be included on the muscle when elevated. The size of the flap had a great advantage in covering the large defects that occurred after trauma and the cancer surgery. The vascular pedicle is long and of large caliber. The principal disadvantage of this flap is restriction in adduction of the arm. The donor site scar is acceptable for all patienis. Between 1993-2000 14 patients underwent soft tissue reconstruction of the different anatomic regions of the body using free latissimus dorsi flap. All free flaps survived completely.
