THE PSYCHOSOCIAL PROBLEMS OF WORKING ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR SOLUTION SUGGESTIONS

Abstract

The study was aimed to describe the psycho-social problems and developmental needs of working adolescents who work full-time. In the first stage of analysis, 620 apprentices were administered the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI; Derogatis & Spencer, 1982). In the second stage of analysis, 620 subjects were divided into high and low risk groups based on their BSI scores. Cutoff points of high and low risk groups were determined according to 1 standard deviation above and below the mean value of transformed BSI scores. There were 93 subjects in the high risk group, 77 of which were interviewed. The mean age of these subjects was 16.35 ±1.43 years. The sample was consisted of 55 (71.4%) boys and 22 (28.6%) girls. The psycho-social problems were parent-adolescent conflict, parent's marital accord, having a single parent, and work related problems. Their solution suggestions contained to solve the work related problems include preventing of abuse at workplace, increasing of wages, not working till late hours, having leisure time for resting, vacation, and friends. In conclusion, work conditions, environment, and relationships operate as a psychosocial stressor for working adolescents.
