DOES THE GASTRIC MUCOSAL EOSINOPHIL CONCENTRATION SHOW SEASONAL VARIATIONS?

Abstract

Resting on our observation that gastric mucosal eosinophil density increases from “time to time”, we sought for a possible seasonal variation and relationship with accompanying pathologies. Among the biopsies evaluated during the previous year, twelve “month group” were arranged each including first 10 patients' biopsies of every month, excluding the cases having disorders that may lead to elevated eosinophil counts. In a total of 240 antral and corporal biopsies of 120 adult patients, 10 consecutive areas were counted and mean eosinophil density (MED) in one high power field was determined as Eo/HPF. The difference between MED's of months and seasons and relationship with age, gender, gastritis and H.pylori (HP) infection were evaluated by T-test and nonparametric tests. Female/male ratio was 1.4; mean age was 48±16 (R: 20-83 yr) and MED was: 0.80±0.69 Eo/HPF (0-3.35 Eo/HPF). The difference between antral and corporal eosinophil densities were insignificant.
