The prevalences of allergic diseases symptoms among 6-7 yr–old school children in Denizli

Abstract

Introduction : Allergic diseases are the most common diseases in childhood. There is not enough data showing the prevalence rate of allergic diseases in Denizli. This study was performed to evaluate the prevalence of allergic diseases symptoms and potential risk factors among 6-7 yr-old school children in Denizli to make comparisons between other city in Turkey and other countries. Materials and Methosd : A total of 3000 children aged 6-7 year in 26 primary schools in Denizli were surveyed using the Turkish translated ISAAC questionnaire. Of the questionnaires 2467 (%82.23) were completed appropriately by parents with an overall response of 82.23%. Results: The prevalances of ever wheezing, doctor-diagnosed asthma, rhinitis, doctor-diagnosed allergic rhinitis, itchy-rash and doctor-diagnosed atopic dermatitis were 22.3%, 17.3%, 33.5%, 6.1%, 11.3% and 2.8%, respectively. Conclusion : This study, the unique epidemiological survey performed among 6-7 yr-old school children in Denizli, Turkey. Further prevalence studies using a standardized methodology for allergic diseases in Turkey are needed to facilitate making comparisons within and between countries
