Vancomycin resistant enterecocci infection diagnosed by post-mortem lung biopsy

Abstract

High dose chemotherapy induces immunosupression in patients with haematological malignancy and also makes them prone to severe and atypical infections. In these patients bacterial and fungal infections are important causes of mortality. In spite of detailed microbiological and radiological tests, it is not always possible to diagnose these infections. Although not common in some patients, diagnosis can be made post-mortem. This report presents a case with lung infection caused by vancomycin resistant enterococi (VRE) diagnosed by post-mortem lung biopsy. Performing post-mortem thorasynthesis and fine needle biopsies can help us to obtain more accurate data to detect the cause of mortality in some of the cases.
