Approach to neurological causes of disorders of consciousness

Abstract

Disorders of consciousness are a common reason for aged patients to admit to the hospital urgently. Because a wide variety of neurological diseases result in a consciousness disorder, it presents a diagnostic challenge to the clinician. At the same time, many of these conditions can be fatal. Therefore, disorder of consciousness represents a medical emergency and requires immediate evaluation. This article reviews the neurological causes of consciousness disorders in elderly patients. An approach to these patients is suggested and specific diagnoses are discussed.
