LEARNING SOME BASIC MEDICAL CONCEPTS DURING THE UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION İN TURKEY: A CROSS-SECTIONAL, MULTICENTER STUDY

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cross-sectional status of some basic medical concepts, mostly related with the Internal Medicine, that should have been learned by sixth year medical students during the undergraduate medical education in Turkey. A questionnaire containing 10 open-ended questions mostly from ınternal medicine was prepared. One hundred seventysix voluntary students from six different medical schools were included in this study. Students under the supervision of the teaching staff during working hours filled the guestionnaires. The ratio of correct answers for each medical school and gender were calculated. Distribution of correct answers between the genders was calculated by Chi-square test. Students ansv/ered ninety-five percent of the questions. The ratio of correct answers varied between 22% and 47 % (mean 31 %) among the universities. There was no gender difference in the ratio of correct answers to questions except one question. The results of the present study suggest that undergraduate medical education in Turkey may have some inadequacies regarding learning or teaching of some basic medical concepts.
