ASYMPTOMATIC URINARY TRACT INFECTION AND HYPERENSION PREVALENCE IN PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

Abstract

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common problem in the pediatric age group. Early recognition and prompt treatment of UTI is important to prevent progression of infection to renal scarring or renal failure. On the other hand, some epidemiological studies on blood pressure among children and adolescents have revealed that blood pressure levels in childhood are the strongest predictors of adult blood pressure levels. This cross-sectional study was designed to detect the prevalence of urinary tract infection and hypertension frequency between the ages of 6-8 year (n=137) in primary school children. In this group the prevalance of asymptomatic urinary tract infection, hematuria and hypertension were 3.8, 2.2 and 8 %, respectively. We conclude that primary school children are under the high risk of UTI and/or hypertension.
