THE EFFICACY OF SOMATOSTATIN AND TERLİPRESSİN IN CONTROLLING OSEPHAGEAL VARICEAL BLEEDING

Abstract

This study was designed to compare the efficacy of somatostatin and terlipressin in controlling acut osephageal variceal bleeding in cirrhotic patients. The patients were randomised into 2 groups to be treated by somatostatin or terlipressin. There were no differences between 2 groups with respect to age, sex. Child Pugh score, control of acute bleeding, the need for blood and fresh frosen plasma transfusion and mortality rates. Both drugs successfully controlled acute bleeding, specially in patients with Child Pugh class A or B. Our results suggests that both drugs can be used as a first line treatment option in patients with acute variceal bleeding.
