HISTOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE RAT STOMACH AFTER CHRONIC NITRIC OXIDE SYNTHASE INHIBITION

Abstract

We examined the histological changes in the rat stomachs, follovving chronic nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition with the administration of hf-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), for two weeks. Fifteen adult female VVistar albino rats were divided into three groups. Group I was the control group. Group II and III received 100mg/L and 500mg/L L-NAME respectively, with their drinking vvaters. With light microscopy, the stomach histology were found normal in groups I and II. İn group III, parietal cells found more numerous in the bases of the gastric glands and some of the gastric glands shovved local dilatations. Gland cells were atrofic around the dilated lumens. İn corpus glands, the secretions of ali the neck mucous cells, were periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) negative in group III, vvhile they vvere PAS positive in groups I and II. İn conclusion, it has been observed that chronic NOS inhibition alters rat stomach microscopy.
