THE EFFECT OF PERİPARTUM ADMINISTRATION OF INTRAMUSCULAR METOCLOPRAMIDE ON THE INITIATION OF LACTATION

Abstract

A total of 68 women who gave birth at Şişli Etfal Training and Education Hospital 2. Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic were recruited into the study. Of these, 27 women were in the control group. To the study group (n:41), metoclopramide was administered intramuscularly during the fifteen-minute-period postoperatively and blood samples were taken immediately before and one hour after injection to determine the plasma prolactin levels. Metoclopramide was not used in the control group. İn each group, the time of initiation of lactation was noted. İn the control group, there was a significant decrease in plasma prolactin levels in the immediate postpartum period (p0.05). There was no significant differenca betvveen two groups with regard to time of initiation of lactation (p>0.05). No correlation was found betvveen plasma prolactin levels and time of initiation of lactation. Peripartum intramuscular metoclopramide administration prevents physiological postpartum decrease in plasma prolactin levels; hovvever, it has no effect on the time of initiation of lactation.
