PATENT PROFİLE OF ALOPECIA AREATA: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Abstract

Alopecia areata is a common diasease characterized by, usually patchy, nonscarring hair loss and may be associated with autoimmune disesases, emotional stress and foci of infection. The extensive forms are alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis. In this study, 110 cases of alopecia (63 alopecia areata, 11 alopecia totalis and 36 alopecia universalis) who were followed up in Ege University Medical Faculty Dermatology Clinic between 1994 - 2000, was evaluated to determine the epidemiologic features and the incidence of associated systemic diseases retrospectively. We found that 17 (%13.6) cases had autoimmune diseases (15 case of autoimmune thyroiditis, one case of autoimmune hepatitis, one case of diabetes mellitus), and 28 cases had anemia (24 cases of iron deficiency, 3 cases of megaloblastic anemia, one case of thalassemia minör). The relation betvveen the clinical forms of alopecia and associated systemic diseases were evaluated statistically.
