INVESTIGATION OF SELF-STUDY PROCESS OF FIRST YEAR STUDENTS IN DOKUZ EYLÜL UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Abstract

In Problem-based Learning (PBL), students' effective use of self-study process is important for taking responsibility in self-learning and the achievement of mastery learning. The aim of the present study is to investigate how the PBL-implementing Dokuz Eylül University School of Medicine's students use their self-study times and their opinions on learning resources. The first year students who completed the 2001-2002 fall semester were included in the study. A questionnaire form consisting of questions and a scale on how students use their self-study processes was given to the students. Lecture notes, other medical books, handwritten student notes taken during lectures are the most frequently used resources. 80% of the students highly rated the Learning Resources Centre as sufficient or partly sufficient. The regular or occasional use of this centre was also highly rated (84.3%). It was observed that the learning resources frequently guided students' self-study process and students prepared their newly acquired information to be presented in the following session. The importance of the depth and breadth of the discussion was emphasized. The learning facilities in the library and the Learning Resources Centre were highly rated as sufficient or partly sufficient. The authors concluded that considerable differences existed among the frequency of use of different learning resources and limited command of a foreign language is likely to restrict the diversity of resources used. In accordance with the improvements in scientific counselling and the development of students' learning skills, a more balanced distribution in the use of different learning resources is expected.
