HISTOLOGICAL STUDY OF LIVER TISSUE FROM NEWBORN RATS OF MOTHERS WITH EPILEPTIC SEIZURES DURING PREGNANCY

Abstract

Databases show insufficient number of studies investigating the possible effects of mother's epileptic seizures during pregnancy on the newborns. In the name of contributing to the idea of having healthy new generations this study was planned to investigate the histological alterations in the liver tissues of newborn rats from mothers experiencing epileptic seizures during pregnancy. For this purpose; adult rats (225–250 gr) were separated into three groups each having 6 rats. First group was injected with 400 IU penicilin-G into the intrahippocampal CA3 region with stereotaxic device on the 13th day of pregnancy and these rats experienced acute grand mal epileptic seizure after penicilline administration. Second group was injected with intrahippocampal saline (sham group) and the third group served as the control group. Pups were sacrificed by lethal dose anesthesia on the neonatal first day and perfused with intracardiac fixative. Liver tissues was dissected, both light and electron microscopy were performed on liver slices. While, liver tissue of the newborn rats from control group showed normal hepatogenesis and hepatocellular maturation, histology of liver tissue of pups from epileptic mothers confirmed delayed maturation.
