CT APPEARANCE OF AN INTRATHORACIC GOSSYPIBOMA : CASE REPORT

Abstract

We report a case of surgically retained intrathoracic sponge in a man who had right pneumonectomy for epidermoid carcinoma three months previously. Computed tomography examination showed a sharply defined thick walled rounded mass with typical whorl-like appearance and air bubbles and pleural effusion. Although surgically retained sponge or swab is commonly reported in the abdominal cavity, it may be seen in different sites of the body and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a mass in patients with atypical thin or thick-walled mass who has undergone a previous operative procedure.
