EVALUATION OF MENTAL HEALTH STATUS AND QUALITY OF LIFE END-STAGE RENAL DISEASE PATIENTS TREATED WITH HEMODIALYSIS

Abstract

Background: End-stage renal disease patients experience severe disruptions of lifestyle and quality of life, such as limitations in physical activity and social life. In part, this is due to the intrusiveness of the treatment (hemodialysis ) that is required. The objective of this study was to examine the association between quality of life and mental health problem in hemodialysis patients. Methods: Ninety-six patients with end-stage renal disease (mean age 46 years) were included in the study. All subjects were given Beck depression scale, state and trait anxiety scales and WHOQOL-BREF. Result: Hemodialysis patients had significant differences according to diagnosis time; physical and environmental domains, according to age; environmental domains, according to education levels; physical, environmental , social relations domains .There was negative correlation between WHOQOL- BREF. Score and depression score at the time of hemodialysis initiation. Conclusions: The results indicate that high psychological distress on hemodialysis is a predictor for low long-term quality of life.
