MYXOPAPİLLARY EPENDYMOMA (CLINICOPATHOLOGIC EVALUATION OF 10 CASES)

Abstract

This study is a clinicopathologic investigation of ten myxopapillary ependymomas encountered during 8 year period. All tumors were located to lumbosacral region that is typical for myxopapillary ependymomas. All but two cases showed relatively indolent histology. Two cases have solid areas with moderate cytologic atypia and mitotic activity. One of these two patient died of sepsis, other patient had pulmonary metastasis after multipl recurrences and 22 years later fom the first excision. Five cases with a follow-up period of approximately 6 year have no recurrences so far. Myxopapillary ependymomas have low risk for recurrences but it should be follow-up for a long time and very rarely it may show distant metastasis.
