DISTRIBUTION OF EBV-LMP 1 EXPRESSION ACCORDING TO HISTOPATHOLOGİCAL SUBTYPES OF CLASSICAL HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMAS

DISTRIBUTION OF EBV-LMP 1 EXPRESSION ACCORDING TO HISTOPATHOLOGİCAL SUBTYPES OF CLASSICAL HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMAS

Abstract

Epstein –Barr virus plays role in the pathogenesis of classical Hodgkin's lymphomas. Epstein Barr virus latent membrane protein-1 ( EBV-LMP1 ) is usually expressed in Hodgkin and Reed Sternberg ( HRS ) cells. In this study, the immunohistochemical expression of EBV-LMP1 in classical Hodgkin's lympoma cases and its distribution according to histopathological subtypes were investigated. In Ankara Oncology Hospital, Department of Pathology, 37 cases; diagnosed as Hodgkin's lymphoma between 1998-2004 with adequate tissue samples to study, were included in this study group. Immunohistochemically, staining with anti EBV-LMP1 antibody was applied. In 19 of 37 classical Hodgkin's lymphoma cases (51,35%) EBV-LMP1 expression was observed. In 11 of 13 mixed cellularity subtype (84,6%), three of 14 nodular sclerosis subtype (21,4%), five of six lymphocyte depleted subtype (83,3%) EBV-LMP1 expression was seen in HRS cells. No expression was observed in all of four lymphocyte rich subtype. In classical Hodgkin's lymphoma cases, the expression of EBV-LMP1 supports that EBV infection plays a role in pathogenesis. Among the histopathological subtypes highest expression ratio was observed in mixed cellularity type, lowest ratio was observed in lymphocyte rich type. Other agents must be researched in the pathogenesis of the cases which are not associated with EBV infection.
