EVALUATION OF HOSPITAL INFECTIONS IN NEUROSURGERY INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the infections encountered in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of neurosurgery Depertment of Ege University Faculty of Medicine from different aspects including; agents of infections, lenght of stay and rate of mortality. Method:This study was performed between January 2004 and December 2004. Patients who admitted to ICU were daily visited and data collected was recorded in a form. The diagnosis of ICU infections were established according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria. Data were analysed with SPSS 11.0 program. Results: In this period 119 patients (Female: 51, Male: 68 and the mean age were 49.7±22.0)) were investigated for 1733 patient days. Seventy-five infection attacks were observed in 51 patients. The incidence of infection was 63.0/100 and the incidence dansity was 43.2/1000. Urinary tract infections were the most common infection.
