HEMIAGENESIS OF THE THYROID: CAN DIAGNOSTIC WORK-UP MISLEAD US?

Abstract

Hemiagenesis of the thyroid gland is a rare anomaly in which one thyroid lobe fails to develop during embriological development. Up to now about 260 cases have been reported in the literature. Only during investigations for other thyroid diseases leads to the occasional detection of thyroid hemiagenesis. In this report, we are presenting a case where preoperative scintigrafic evaluations failed to diagnose thyroid hemiagenesis. Although hemiagenesis of the thyroid is a rare abnormality, each diagnostic work-up must be evaluated in a multidisciplinary approach to prevent misinterpretations which can affect the operative approach.
