DIAGNOSTIC PERITONEAL LAVAGE; IS IT REALLY AN OBITUARY

Abstract

Recently, radiodiagnostic- based algorithms are designed for the management of trauma. In this article, we are willing to present the recent place of diagnostic peritoneal lavage and answer questions concerning this topic in the light of our results. Material and methods: A total 601 adult penetrating and blunt trauma patients admitting to our clinic between July 2001 - September 2005 were evaluated retrospectively Results: Eighty-three % of the patients studied were male while 17% were female. The mean age was 30 ± 12 years. There were 50,7% injuries due to blunt and 49,3% due to penetrating trauma. Mean ISS was 20 ± 10. A total of 134 (22%) patient underwent diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL). When comparing DPL rates between two different time intervals (Period I= July 1994 – December 1999 and Period II = January 2000 – September 2005) it was observed that the indication of DPL decreased significantly in Period II. Since radiodiagnostics and diagnostic laparoscopy is used more efficiently in the traumatized patient, the use of DPL is decreasing. Recently, DPL has a limited role and seems to be indicated only in selected patients.
