CARCINOID TUMORS OF THE LUNG: OUTCOMES OF SURGICAL TREATMENT

Abstract

Background: Carcinoid tumors, which are accounted for only %1 of all lung tumors, are known with their good response to surgical treatment. On the other hand, studies about the extend of surgical resection and the prognosis still go on. In this study, our personal experience on lung carcinoid tumor patients who were treated surgically was presented. Material and Method: Eleven patients surgically treated for lung carcinoid tumor in our clinic in the past five years were reviewed retrospectively. The data regarding age, sex, preoperative symptoms, diagnostic procedures, location of the tumor, type of surgical resection, tumor type, stage, overall survival and postoperative complications were obtained, and also, literature was reviewed. Results: The mean age ( + SD) and age range of the five male ( 45% ) and six female ( 55% ) patients were 46.1 ± 16.7 and 19 – 76 respectively. The frequent symptom was cough which was observed in five patients (45%). Nine patients were diagnosed as typical and the remaining two patients were diagnosed as atypical carcinoid tumors, and the most efficient diagnostic method was broncoscopic biopsy (82%). Lobectomy was the most frequent surgical procedure (83.3%). In nine patients (82%) the tumor were localized centrally. Regarding the postoperative stage of the disease, Nine of the eleven patients were in 1A, and two in 1B. Except one patient with prolonged air leak, no other postoperative complication was observed. Mean follow-up time was 25.9 ± 16.1 (3 – 64) months, and no deaths occured up to date. Discussion: Lung resection provides a long term survival for carcinoid tumor patients. For central localized tumors, bronchoscopic biopsy can be safely applicated and the most important diagnostic method. The survival rate of the patients in our series is found to be similar with the literature.
