Do future general surgery residents have adequate surgical clerckship performance during medical school?

Abstract

During the 6 year lasting study, what ideal is for the medical students (MS) especially in the final year of the study, is that they have more chance for practicing study in the hospital to have a satisfactory outcome. This outcome for a MS, who wants to be a surgeon in the future, must include learning basic surgical principals, attending the surgical operations and improve the handwork. In this study, we tried to analyze the level of outcome of final year MS after their general surgery rotation. Between August 2005 – January 2006, 136 MS answered this questionnaire including 18 questions. There were 72 male (52%), 64 (48%) female and mean age was 23,9. Only 89 MS (65%) attended the operation in a sterile condition. Eleven (8%) of 34 MS (25%) who plan to choose any surgical branch in the future underlined general surgery. Number of the operation attended was mean 4,7, ranging between 3 and 8. According to the variety of the operations, only two of the MS had a chance to attend different types of surgery, while others had attended only one. We conclude that, although it seems as if the future general surgery resident benefits adequately from the surgical rotation, there are significant disadvantages for the carrier of these future general surgery residents in terms of types of surgery and attendance to the operations.
