Phototransistor triggering technique for recording visual evoked potentials

Abstract

Introduction: Visual evoked potentials are the bioelectrical responses of the brain to visual stimuli. For recording stimulus evoked potentials in neurology and ophtalmology clinics and electrophysiology laboratories dedicated and expensive equipment and peripherals are used. Such systems are not usually adaptable for use in slightly different variants of the intended application. Materials and Methods: While working with pattern shift visual evoked potentials in our laboratory, we developed a new triggering method to record visually evoked potentials using phototransistors, a system incorporating two ordinary personal computers, one for pattern generation and the other for signal recording as described in this study. Results and Discussion: The simple and inexpensive data acquisition and analysis system designed for this study and used with success can easily be adapted to applications in neurology and ophtalmology clinics without any major changes in hardware and software.
