Evaluation of the cases appealed as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever

Abstract

Introduction: Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is one of the mortal hemorrhagic fever syndrome with zoonosis characteristics. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus is most frequently infected with the tick in the hyalomma family. In our country CCHF cases have been reported since 2002. Most frequent reports are from Middle Anatolian and Eastern Dark Sea parts of the country. Aim of this study is to determine the demographic properties of the cases reported and to evaluate the results of analyses. Material and Method: Two hundred fifty three cases, all of which were diagnosed as tick bite within the April- December 2006 period, were examined in a retrospective manner. All of the 192 cases followed were observed for 12-24 hours and laboratory tests were conducted. Physical examinations and laboratory tests were repeated for the first 5 days also on the 10th day, examinations and tests were repeated and recorded. Results: Mean age of the patients was 6.6 ±3.3 year (0-14). Ticks were most frequently observed at the head-neck area. All of the 192 cases followed, in three cases (1.6%) fever, two cases (1% ) vomiting, five cases ( 2.6%) prolonged aPTT-PT were observed. Conclusion: Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever was confirmed in only one of the cases examined. This study revealed that it isn't necessary to hospitalized the patients from whose bodies ticks are extracted as suggested by the Ministry of Medicine instead, it is more suitable that applying to a doctor when symptoms like fever, headache, fatigue, nausea and vomiting appears.
