Regression of herniated cervıcal disc after trauma

Abstract

We report a case of herniated cervical disc that regressed after trauma. 47 year-old female patient with neck and left upper limb pain who has been receiving conservative medical treatment admitted after two years with pain in the left shoulder, arm and interscapular region. She had weakness in the left arm and numbness of left first finger. On MR images an extruded herniated soft cervical disc in the C5-6 intervertebral disc space.has been detected. The patient did not accept surgery and she reported that her pain was relieved suddenly after a trauma that she lived 9 months after detection of the disc herniation. MR images which were obtained in the day of trauma revealed that herniated disc had disappeared and only a bulging in C5-6 level remained. Spontaneous regression of disc herniations, especially of lumbar region is well known and defined phenomenon. No any case of herniated disc similar to ours that regressed abruptly and secondary to a trauma could be detected. We consider that the herniated soft discs which are detected as hyperintense on T2 weighted scans have more potentials of spontaneous and sudden regression than others..
