A rare reason of ileus: bezoar

Abstract

Bezoar is retained concretions of ingested foreign materials that accumulate within the gastrointestinal tract. They usually form in the stomach and can pass into the small bowel and cause obstruction and occasionally perforation. In this article, we present 3 patients with ileus, who were referred to our department for evaluation with abdomen CT for determination of the obstruction level and its etiology. CT examinations detected isolated small bowel bezoars. Two of them had a history of gastric surgery. The third patient had diabetes mellitus, which is a risk factor for bezoar. All three patients were operated and the diagnosis was proved with pathologic examination. In this manuscript clinical presentation and radiological findings of bezoars are reviewed in the light of these three cases.
