Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis: five different cases were treated medically

Abstract

We aimed to discuss the clinical and radiological features and treatment approaches in five patients diagnosed with idiopathic granulomatous mastitis .The patients were evaluated with mammography, ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration biopsy. The mammographies of the three patients were evaluated as normal, one of them had asymetrical density increase, the other had bilateral well- circumscibed, smootly contoured masses. Ultrasonographic images showed masses with lobulated contour which were heterogeneous hypoechoic in texture and had suspicion of malignancy as well as tubular hypoechoic structures and complex cystic lesions. Two case received analgesic - antiinflammatory and antibiotheraphy treatment. Spontaneus regression was in 3-6 month control. The other three cases who were treated with antibiotheraphy did not show meaningful regression, or after they were evaluated for autoimmune disease, they were given steroid theraphy. After the steroid theraphy the clinical and radiological findings regressed. No evidence of recurrence was seen in the following 6-24 months.
