Supraventricular tachycardia responding to amiodarone developed during umblical vein catheterization

Abstract

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is defined frequently in the neonatal period. In treatment of SVT, adenosine is the first agent with alternatives including digoxine, procainamide, lidocaine, propafenon, β-blockers, verapamil and rarely amiodarone. We report on a preterm baby with a gestational age 35 weeks mechanically ventilated for Respiratory Distress Syndrome, who developed SVT during umblical vein catheterization and was unresponsive to vagal stimulation and digoxine, which was consequently stopped by amiodarone.
