Approach to metabolical causes of cognitive impairement: II. Non-endocrine causes

Abstract

In many countries, there is significant increase in the number of elderly admitted to emergency services. In the elderly population there are more complex health problem compared to younger patients and they require more time and resources. They go to the emergency services more often, additionally they face more negative consequences after discharge from the hospital. Atypical presentation is common in elderly patients, so clinical signs and symptoms may differentiate and at the same time they may include psycho-cognitive and functional areas. The diagnosis of cognitive impairment can be made only in less than half of the present cases in elderly patients who are admitted to the emergency department. The metabolical causes of cognitive impairment will be discussed in this section in respect to non-endocrine causes.
